We’re the international Christian-Missions leaders. We build relationships with the communities where we are working to determine the real issues and empower volunteers to provide real solutions. There are many programs that offer international volunteer opportunities; however few offer a structured program that offers a safe and healthy environment with full logistical support for Church teams to focus on meeting the needs of the community.   Orphanage Hope of a Child invites you to join us for a short term mission trip to the Dominican Republic or Nicaragua. We have many opportunities to work with the churches and disadvantaged communities in the countries where we are working.  Individuals, couples, families, high school and college teams, and general church teams are invited to join us any week of the year.

School Year Mission Trips

During the school year, we are normally teaching English and literacy at the Orphanage Hope of a Child English Institute and in local schools. The school system in the Dominican Republic is the worst in North and South America; extra help is greatly appreciated. Learning English provides career and educational opportunities. During the school year, we promise that volunteers of all faiths will be comfortable working with Orphanage Hope of a Child.

Summer Missions
During the summer, we offer specific Christian based programs for Christian individuals, couples, families, and church teams. Our normal program is to provide vacation bible schools camps to the orphanage children, to local neighborhoods, and in nearby villages. For the kids, it's like a week at Disneyworld!

Each camp has a Christian theme, and starts out with worship songs and a bible lesson introduction. The kids then divide into four groups (young girls, young boys, older girls, older boys) and rotate through various stations. The stations can consist of different things, including bible lesson, arts and crafts, recreation and activities, health, reading, English, and music. Mission participants lead the opening and closing, act as guides to lead the groups from station to station, and as station leaders to lead each station. We normally do two camps a day, morning and afternoon, with two different sets of kids. Experienced summer college interns provide support to short term volunteers and church mission teams.

Some church teams elect to do something different, or in addtion - construction, health, sports, baseball, etc.

The weekly itinerary consists of:
  • Saturday: Travel
  • Sunday: Orientation, Week Prep, Meet the Kids, Walk Through Town, Church
  • Monday - Thursday: Camp/Work, Special Evening Activities
  • Friday: Cultural Morning Activity, Buffet Lunch, Beach Afternoon Swim
  • Saturday: Travel

Additional Details

You will be living in "summer camp" facilities, either at the orphanage or at the Orphanage Hope of a Child English Institute - bunk house sleeping, buffet meals, good toilets/showers. Simple and rustic but comfortable. Details

The program donation for one week is $800/person plus airfare. For teams of 10 or more who sign up by the early sign-up deadline, the program donation is reduced to just $500/person. Children under age 18 traveling with a parent have just a $300 program donation fee. For every 10 adult program donations paid, the 11th is waived. The program fee donation includes housing, food, ground transportation, insurance, professional on-site American and Canadian leadership, and includes a signficant donation to provide the basic necessities at the orphanage.

We are partnering with the churches that operate the orphanages we work with, and the other churches in the community. We are looking for small groups and churches to join us. When more international churches join us, we can partner with more local churches, and serve more children and adults.

Orphanage Hope of a Child has been working in the Dominican Repubilc since 1994. Over 9000 volunteers have joined us during this time. We have a full time on-site staff of American and Canadian leaders. We have never had a volunteer's personal safety threatened. We use common sense safety and health practices.

This is a great opportunity for individuals, couples, families, a general church team, a youth team, a men's group, or a woman's group. We invite you to join us!

If you haven't led a team to a developing country before (and especially if you have!), you will appreciate the "turn key" approach we take. We will purchase the insurance, meet you at the airport, arrange the meals, housing, ground transportation, and projects. You'll still be busy, but it will be time well spent working with and supporting your team members, not managing basic logistics.

Summer 2012 Family Mission Trips
A family mission trip with Orphanage Hope of a Child to the Dominican Republic is a great experience. Everyone has something to offer, regardless of age.  And it's a great lesson for all of us that not having material things doesn't mean you can't be happy, and to make us more appreciative of our blessings at home.
